New Gardens for Charnley-Persky House

Jun 15, 2016 by Pauline Saliga, SAH Executive Director
SAH installed new plantings in three outdoor areas around Charnley-Persky House on April 23, 2016, thanks to the generosity of the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Fund at The Chicago Community Trust. Designed by Chicago landscape architect Daniel Weinbach of Daniel Weinbach and Partners, Ltd., the gardens feature densely-planted perennials that are both colorful and suitable for Chicago’s seasonal temperature swings. The two main gardens are located in the parkways in front of Charnley-Persky House and two smaller planting areas are in the back and service courtyard of the house. Weinbach, an award-winning landscape designer, has a portfolio that includes local, national and international projects that range from small-scale gardens and playgrounds for new Chicago Housing Authority residences to large-scale gardens and parks for airports, roof gardens, and outdoor plazas. One of Weinbach’s most recent large-scale projects was the 53-acre green field development for the Panduit corporate headquarters in suburban Tinley Park, Illinois, which won a 2013 Illinois Chapter ASLA Honor Award. We extend our sincere appreciation to Richard H. Driehaus for taking a personal interest in the curb appeal of Charnley-Persky House, to Daniel Weinbach for designing an appropriate garden for this historic house, and to McFarlane Douglas and Companies for managing the installation and maintenance of our new green spaces.
