These links are to online resources connected to physical museums, archives, or other official institutions.

The Skyscraper Museum

Electronic exhibits about Manhattan and access to the Visual Index to the Virtual Archive, a searchable database of the museum's collection of images. Other highlights are web versions of the museum's shows on Building the Empire State Building and Downtown New York, the Manhattan Timeforations (the layered development grid is worth the time), and the Banker's Trust Virtual Archive. Requires Flash.

 

Temple of Liberty: Building the Capitol for a New Nation

Library of Congress online exhibition about the design and construction of the capitol. Primarily consists of text with links to architectural drawings, watercolors, and photos from the library's collections.

 

Arise and Build: A Centennial Commemoration of the 1895 Rotunda Fire

University of Virginia site that discusses Jefferson's original design for the campus' rotunda, the devastating 1895 fire that decimated the structure, and its rebuilding.

 

National Building Museum

Site includes information about the National Building Museum and several online exhibits. As of 10/04, the two exhibits were: Building America and Liquid Stone: New Architecture in Concrete. Both require the latest Flash plug-in for viewing.

 

Drawings at work: William Robert Ware and the Origins of American Architectural Education

An essay about William Robert Ware and the development of architectural education in the United States. Includes discussion of student work, Ware’s study collection of drawings, and the MIT curricula.

 

From Louis Sullivan to SOM: Boston grads go to Chicago

Discusses the contributions of MIT students in Chicago. Sections on tall office building, the World’s Columbian Exposition, domestic work, and later Chicago work.

 

The Work of Charles & Ray Eames: A legacy of invention

Companion website to the Eames traveling exhibit coordinated by the Library of Congress and the Vitra Design Museum. Sections include: Biography, Space (coverage of the Eames’ house), Culture, Beauty, Furniture, and Science.

 

LA Obscura: The Architectural Photographs of Julius Shulman
Companion site to 1999 exhibit held at USC’s Fisher Gallery. Include a site map for buildings still extant in Los Angeles, biographical information about architects, and resources for local architectural and conservation organizations.

 

The World’s Columbian Exposition: Idea, Experience, Aftermath

A hypertext thesis created in 1996 by Julie K. Rose explores visitor’s reactions to the fair and its legacy.
