Frequently Asked Questions
What is SAHARA?
The SAH Architecture Resources Archive (SAHARA) is a new, online library of architectural and landscape images that SAH is assembling for research and teaching in the field of architectural history and its related disciplines. SAHARA is a collaborative effort among the Society, scholars of architectural history, librarians and libraries, and ARTstor. In the first year of its development scholars from Brown University, MIT,
University of
Virginia, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation have contributed images to SAHARA. The scholars worked closely with librarians at their institutions to create and catalog the images. At its launch at the SAH Annual Meeting in
Pasadena on April 1, 2009, SAHARA contained approximately 10,000 digitized images and 200 QTVR panoramas that will be available for download by SAH members. In addition, SAH members can now contribute their own digital images to this shared online academic resource.
When will SAHARA be available for use?
SAHARA is available for use by SAH members right now. Log into SAHARA using your email address and your SAH membership ID preceded by "00", e.g., 0012345. You may then upload your own images to SAHARA or download images contributed by others.
Who has access to SAHARA?
SAHARA is available to all individual SAH members. In its initial three-year development phase, it will be free to all SAH members. For the long-term, SAH must determine what it will cost to sustain this online library and the SAH Board will determine if SAHARA will continue as a free or subscription resource.
If images will be availble for teaching, will they also be available for use in scholarly publications?
SAH currently is requesting permission to use the images for a wide variety of non-commerical purposes, including scholarly publications. However, such permissions will be granted on a case by case basis, depending on the wishes of each contributor.
Do I have to become a member of SAH to use SAHARA?
