3rd International Conference on Urban Landscape Evolution: towns and suburbs

This year the subject intends to develop discussion the relationship between towns and its suburbs, in a wide chronological perspective, from Roman times to the Modern Age. In fact, towns has always develop a close connection with its suburbs, namely with its immediate surroundings, but also with the autonomous settlements located near the city. In this context, the walls and its doors, as well as the street system, play an important role in the interconnection of the city with its adjacent landscape. In different time periods, certain structures and activities were preferentially located in towns' suburbs, such as necropolis and other religious structures, but also some agricultural, industrial and extractive activities, among others. Simultaneously, quite often, towns' growth incorporated peripheral areas, that were transformed into urban space. On the opposite, urban area reduction makes some urban spaces transform into suburbs. This makes city and suburbs relationship to substantially differ between different historical periods, as well as from town to town, depending on several factors, such as an expansive or contractive urban process.
