63rd Attingham Summer School (July 4–21, 2014)

  • Dates: 16 Dec, 2013 – 31 Jan, 2014
  • Location: England

Call for Applications: Applications are now being accepted for the 63rd Attingham Summer School (July 4–21, 2014), an intensive eighteen-day residential course devoted to the study of British historic houses.

The purpose of the course is to examine the architectural and social history of the historic house in Britain, study the contents of these buildings – their paintings, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, silver, textiles and other applied arts – as well as the planning, decorative treatment and use of the interiors, and to stimulate debate on problems relating to the conservation and presentation of the country house and its contents. Applications are invited from those working in related fields; scholarship support is available for those in need. The course offers privileged access to approximately 25 houses in three regions of England. The program includes on-site instruction by staff curators and property owners, as well as seminars and lectures provided by eminent visiting scholars who impart a broad artistic and social context for the country house, its landscape, and contents. Discussion among colleagues from a variety of backgrounds enriches the learning process and forms an important component of the program.

Since its foundation in 1952, the Attingham Summer School has been recognized for its careful selection of students and its high academic standards. Museums, universities, historic preservation societies, architectural firms, and arts-related businesses that have sponsored members of their staff have benefited from this unique educational opportunity.

The deadline to apply is January 31, 2014. For application and further information, visit www.americanfriendsofattingham.org.
