Barcelona Glories: Dialogues & Transformation

In February 2013, the Barcelona City Council launched an international competition to select a team of architects for the Glòries Catalanes Square Project. The competition invited architects to transform a 32 acre roundabout of elevated highways into a public space that would facilitate circulation and sustainable mass transit, maximize green space, and showcase a multitude of public services.

Ten multidisciplinary teams developed their proposals over the past ten months, guided by criteria set down in theAgreement for Glòries, signed in 2007 after a long civic participation process. The winning proposal, CANOPY, was designed by Agence Ter & Ana Coello de Llobet.

The transformation of the Glòries square is one of Barcelona’s most significant municipal projects in recent years. The scale of the site and its location at the junction of three of the city’s most important thoroughfares make this a complex project. Its development has been divided into different phases to optimize efforts and resources and minimize social, economic, and environmental impacts. Each phase requires efficient coordination between different municipal areas and the support of all implied operators. The project is currently in the demolition phase.
