The house, completed in 1892, is one of the few extant buildings that displays the combined talents of these world-renowned architects. It is considered a turning point in modern residential design and Frank Lloyd Wright famously called it “the first modern house in America.”
The Gala is slated for the evening of Saturday, November 10, 2012, and will be held at the Racquet Club, a Gold Coast institution with its own rich history. Funds from the gala will support SAH’s mission and help SAH position itself as leader in understanding and interpreting the built environment.
At this year’s Gala, SAH will launch new awards honoring excellence in design-related professions. As Executive Director Pauline Saliga notes, “The SAH mission of making man-made structures and landscapes relevant to contemporary cultural life is increasingly important as a growing percentage of the global population is living in cities. Our Annual Awards for Excellence celebrate pivotal contributions to designing the future made in the fields of architecture, landscape design, urban planning, preservation and public education.”
The awards roster includes:
The SAH Award for Excellence in Design, Planning and Sustainability
Honoring Phillip Enquist of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill for scripting a Vision for the Great Lakes & St. Lawrence River Region that addresses the phenomenal increase in human population, the impacts of agriculture and urbanization, and the threats of climate change on this, the world’s largest fresh water basin. The Charnley-Persky House was restored by SOM in the 1980s to serve as the location for SOM’s Chicago Institute for Architecture & Urbanism. Today, due in no small part to SOM, Charnley-Persky House is a bellwether for preservation of the unique history of Chicago’s Gold Coast.
The SAH Award for Excellence in Architectural Media
Honoring Gwendolyn Wright, Associate Professor of Architecture & Planning at Columbia University and popular host of the PBS ”History Detectives” series, and WTTW host Geoffrey Baer who currently is filming a nationally-syndicated program, “Ten Buildings that Changed America.”
The SAH Award for Excellence in Architectural Conservation
Honoring architect John Eifler, of John Eifler Associates, for his continued restoration of Charnley-Persky House and for his demonstration that historic structures should incorporate green initiatives.

This marks the first year that SAH is participating in the CHF, a festival that promotes the humanities through lectures, concerts, and films. Wright will tackle intriguing mysteries about America’s history with innovative thinking and keen curiosity - in part because she is a scholar of the humanities as well as one of the hosts of the popular PBS television series History Detectives. As a historian of architecture at New York’s Columbia University, Wright enjoys showing the public how historians think, evaluate and analyze. Presented in partnership with SAH.

Study Tour to CUBA with Belmont Freeman
This tour is Sold Out
This is a tour highly customized to suit the interests of SAH members, taking us to sites not found in the guide books and including many not ordinarily open to the public. The tour will be led by Belmont Freeman, FAIA, an architect and scholar of Cuban descent whose extensive travel, research, writing and lecturing have established him as a leading expert on the architecture of Cuba. Along the way we will meet with Cuban architects and historians, to engage meaningful dialog on topics of architecture, urban policy and preservation, adding depth to participants’ appreciation of Cuba. Friendly Planet Travel, an agency licensed to coordinate travel to and within Cuba and with many years of experience operating on the island, is managing the logistics of the tour to ensure, to the fullest extent possible, a smooth, safe and comfortable journey.
We look forward to seeing you in Havana!
