    SAH Awards Gala Tickets Now Available
Currently celebrating its 75th anniversary, SAH will host the 6th annual Awards for Architectural Excellence gala Friday, Nov. 6 at the Woman’s Athletic Club (626 North Michigan Ave.) This year, SAH is proud to present the Architectural Journalism Award to Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger, the Heritage Conservation award to architect T. Gunny Harboe (perhaps best known for his work on Chicago’s Rookery and Reliance buildings) and the Architectural Scholarship & Preservation Advocacy award to Richard Longstreth of The George Washington University, a past president of SAH. Tickets are on sale at sah.org/gala.

    Refining the SAH Annual International Conference 
SAH has evolved over the past 75 years and we continue to reshape our annual conference to broaden our global presence. SAH maintains its original vision for our conference, which is to provide an international platform for its members to present new interpretive research on the history of the built environment. As we look forward to the SAH’s next 75 years, it is an appropriate time to draw on member feedback and take steps to improve our processes and keep up with technology, while meeting the expectations of our members. In the coming weeks and months you will probably notice some differences from previous conferences, and we would like to share them with you now so that you are aware of them.

The schedule of paper sessions for the SAH 2016 Annual International Conference is now available on the conference mobile guide.     Lecture by Thomas Kelley
Thomas Kelley, who operates an architecture collaborative with Carrie Norman under the pseudonym Norman Kelley, will lecture about their latest work on Tuesday, September 22, as part of MAS Context’s 2015 Fall Talks series. The lecture will take place at the Charnley-Persky House, headquarters of the Society of Architectural Historians.

    SAH 75th Anniversary Reception at Harvard
Please join us to celebrate the founding of SAH at Harvard University in 1940. The SAH 75th Anniversary Reception will take place on Wednesday, October 28, 2015, from 5–6:30 p.m. at the Frances Loeb Library, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, 48 Quincy Street, Cambridge, MA. Immediately following the reception, at 6:30 p.m. you are invited to attend the PhD Seminar by SAH board member Luis Castañeda, assistant professor art history, Syracuse University. Registration is required.

    Building Art: Paul Goldberger on Frank Gehry
SAH has partnered with the Chicago Humanities Festival to present Building Art: Paul Goldberger on Frank Gehry on Saturday, November 7. For many, Frank Gehry is considered one of the world's most important living architects. To Chicagoans, his undulating Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park is at the very heart of our city. Paul Goldberger, the New Yorker’s architecture critic and author of Why Architecture Matters, finds that understanding Gehry’s work and personal story holds undeniable appeal. In Building Art, Goldberger looks to the man’s immigrant grandparents, two marriages, and even his longtime therapist, to provide a context for his audacious and impressive structures.

  Registration Open for Biennial Tours of Charnley-Persky House
The Society of Architectural Historians, in partnership with the Chicago Architecture Biennial, will present an expanded tour program of its National Historic Landmark headquarters, the Charnley-Persky House, during the Biennial. Guided tours of the house will be offered every Wednesday and Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. between October 7 and December 23. All tours are open to the public. Registration is now open.

    Membership Dues Increase on October 1
The SAH Board of Directors has approved a $5 dues increase starting on October 1, 2015. This increase was necessary due to increasing costs for providing services to all SAH members. Every attempt has been made to keep the increase to an absolute minimum. The last dues increase was in 2013.

    New Content on SAH Archipedia: Nebraska
We are pleased to announce the addition of the first born-digital content to SAH Archipedia. Fifty-two Nebraska entries, written by Keith H. Sawyers and Peter Olshavsky, comprise the first half of entries featuring Nebraska’s 100 most representative buildings. This new content is part of an ongoing project, supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities, to produce building histories for each of the states not yet included in SAH Archipedia.

    Monuments of Balkan Empires: Ottoman and Habsburg Architecture in Zagreb, Sarajevo and Mostar

I begin where I left off in my first post a month ago, in the city of Porec in Croatia, where both fifth-century Byzantine and nineteenth-century Italian heritage are present. The theme of this post is the architectural presence of two of the empires that, over the last 1600 years, have ruled in the Balkans. The conflicted history of the region is particularly present this year, in 2015, with the 20th Anniversary of major events during the Yugoslav wars—most importantly the massacre of Srebrenica (now in Bosnia-Hercegovina) in July 1995.

    2015 Charles E. Peterson Fellowship Report

Both the Warren House (1850) in Newburgh and Chichester’s Inn (1680-1710) in Huntington tell defining stories about the New York towns that house them. As the recipient of The Charles E. Peterson Fellowship this summer, I was given the opportunity to research these two pre-1860s buildings, and compose their histories as they have been interpreted and transmitted by those who constructed, inhabited, recorded, and preserved them.

New ACLS Fellowship Opportunity for Liberal Arts College Faculty
In 2015 ACLS is offering a new set of fellowships designated specifically for liberal arts college faculty that is available through the Frederick Burkhardt Residential Fellowship for Recently Tenured Scholars. Thanks to a grant from the Mellon Foundation, the Burkhardt program now offers recently tenured liberal arts college faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences the opportunity to pursue ambitious research projects for an academic year while in residence at the university department or university-based humanities center of their choice. Details are available at http://www.acls.org/programs/burkhardt/ and, as with all programs, applications must be submitted through the ACLS online application system.
 
Lord & Burnham Collection Architectural Plans Now Available for Research
The LuEsther T. Mertz Library at the New York Botanical Garden recently completed a grant-funded project to inventory and rehouse a collection of architectural plans of glasshouses, part of the records of the Lord & Burnham Company. This one-year project enabled the completion of the unprocessed backlog of drawings and plans that were part of the surviving business records of the company, which was the largest manufacturer of glasshouse structures in 19th- and 20th-century America. The grant from the New York State Archives Documentary Heritage Program (DHP) allowed the Library staff to complete the processing of the remaining inventory of 131 cubic feet of a total of 150,000 architectural plans and drawings held in the Garden’s archives. A subject guide documenting the history of the company and offering access to an inventory database is available for searching from the Library’s website. A complete finding guide to the entire collection can be viewed on the website of The New York Botanical Garden Archives. 
 
Current SAH Opportunities
H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship: This $50,000 fellowship will allow a recent graduate or emerging scholar to study by travel for one year. Deadline October 1.

HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: A joint program with the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), this fellowship permits an architectural historian to work on a 12-week HABS project during the summer. Deadline December 31.
 
SAH Chapter and Partner News
The Marion Dean Ross Chapter of the SAH is pleased to offer the 2015 Elisabeth Walton Potter Research Award. The purpose of the Award is to further awareness and knowledge of the architectural heritage of the Pacific Northwest. Awards range from $500 and $2000 and are awarded to from one to several recipients per year. Applications are due by September 15, 2015. SAH/SCC will present "Authors on Architecture: Ostroff on Eames" on September 19, from 2-4 p.m. at Herman Miller's LA showroom. Daniel Ostroff will discuss his fourth book on Eames, An Eames Anthology (Yale University Press, 2015). Surrounded by furniture designed by Charles and Ray Eames, you'll be treated to surprises and new insights into many of the seminal designs of the 20th century. The lecture and book signing is free. RSVP required. 

The Design Matters Conference, presented by the Association of Architecture Organizations, is the nation’s largest annual meeting of not-for-profit professionals, volunteers, and content area experts interested in the creation and management of cultural programs that spur broader public interest in architecture and design. Join us in Chicago on November 4-7 for presentations and workshops about exhibitions, programs, tours, and youth education about the built environment.

The Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian and Russian Art and Architecture, Inc. (SHERA) has successfully launched the new Visiting Scholar Program that enables its members to conduct individual research while being involved in educational activities at international partner institutions, i.e. the Russian State University for the Humanities (RGGU) in Moscow. Apart from RGGU, SHERA has established working relationship with the Department of Art History of the European University at St. Petersburg (EUSP).
