 | Register Now for Louis Kahn in San Diego and La Jolla On Friday, November 4, 2016, SAH will host a study day in San Diego and La Jolla, California, exploring the work of Louis I. Kahn. The day will begin at The San Diego Museum of Art with a special, in-depth preview of the exhibition Louis Kahn: The Power of Architecture, followed by a behind-the-scenes site visit at the architect's pioneering Salk Institute for Biological Studies. The study day will end with a "Friends Lecture" and reception at The San Diego Museum of Art.

 | Tickets Available for SAH Awards Gala Tickets for SAH's 7th annual Awards Gala are on sale now. The Society will present its 2016 Awards for Architectural Excellence to Richard H. Driehaus, Sarah Herda and Peter Landon, FAIA. Proceeds benefit the educational mission of SAH and the ongoing restoration of SAH's Landmark headquarters, the Charnley-Persky House.

 | SAH Announces 2016 SAH/Mellon Author Award Winners SAH has named Peter Christensen, Itohan I. Osayimese and Robin Schuldenfrei as the recipients of the 2016 SAH/Mellon Author Awards. These awards are designed to provide financial relief to scholars who are publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment, and who are responsible for paying for rights and permissions for images or for commissioning maps, charts or line drawings in their publications.

 | SAH Hires New Director of Programs Christopher Kirbabas joins the Society of Architectural Historians as its new director of programs, having worked in not-for-profit associations for the past 19 years as a meeting professional. Previous organizations Kirbabas has worked for include Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society, American Massage Therapy Association and most recently, the Association of Legal Administrators.

 | SAH's American Architecture and Landscape Field Trip Program Makes a Grant to I-NOMA In July 2016 SAH awarded the Illinois Chapter of the National Organization of Minority Architects (I-NOMA) a $5,000 grant to support their Project Pipeline Architecture Summer Camp for Chicagoland students in the sixth through eighth grades. The mission of the annual camp is “to empower young people to affect change in their community through design.”

 | Scotch Whisky Tasting Enjoy an afternoon of fine Scotch whisky tasting on September 24 at the Franklin Room in Chicago, presented by the University of St. Andrews in partnership with SAH. Proceeds from the event will benefit the University of St. Andrews' 600th Anniversary Campaign and the Society of Architectural Historians' 70th Annual International Conference to be held in Glasgow, Scotland, in June 2017.

 | Unfinished Spaces Film Screening MAS Context, in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago and the Society of Architectural Historians, is pleased to present the screening of the film Unfinished Spaces. The screening is part of MAS Context’s 2016 Fall Talks series and it will take place at the Instituto Cervantes of Chicago.

 | Highlights from SAHARA: Institutions of Learning As many of us begin our busy fall season at universities, colleges, archives and libraries, and our children head back to school, we would like to highlight the diverse images of buildings related to education in SAHARA. The collection includes new and old architecture, re-purposed buildings, and buildings in ruin, from rural to urban settings.

 | SAH Archipedia: Idaho Entries Added Sixty-three entries from the state of Idaho have been added to SAH Archipedia. This material, which includes fifty main entries and an additional thirteen subentries, comprises the first half of a list featuring Idaho’s most representative buildings and sites, compiled by state coordinators Anne L. Marshall, Wendy R. McClure, Phillip G. Mead, and D. Nels Reese.

 | Overcrowded Sites and Unexpected Voids: The Extremes of Tourism in Iceland and the Faroe Islands By Danielle S. Willkens, 2015 H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellow With travels this month in the Vesturland, the southern portion of the Ring Road known as the Sudhurland, and a trip to Vestmannaeyjar, I logged nearly 2,000 miles in Iceland in August. Although my itinerary included only the bottom half of the nation, the distance I traversed was twice the length of the Ring Road [Route 1].

| Current SAH Opportunities Study Program Fellowship: Open to current full-time MA and PhD students and emerging professionals, this fellowship is offered for the Louis Kahn in San Diego and La Jolla Study Day and covers the single occupancy price of the tour package. Deadline September 30. H. Allen Brooks Travelling Fellowship: $50,000 fellowship that allows a recent graduate or emerging scholar to study by travel for one year. Deadline October 3. SAH Vietnam & Cambodia Field Seminar: This SAH Field Seminar (December 1-13, 2016) will explore the fascinating architectural landscape of Vietnam and the spectacular Angkor complex in Cambodia, capital of the Khmer empire from the ninth to fifteenth century. Two spots left! Register by September 30. HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: Permits a graduate student in architectural history or a related field to work on a 12-week HABS history project during the summer of 2017. | SAH Chapter and Partner News Society of Historians of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture SHERA welcomes two new institutional members, New York-based foundation St. Petersburg Arts Project, Inc. and The Getty Research Institute. This summer, SHERA received a donation to establish the Maya Semina Graduate Student Travel Grant. The procedure for selecting a grantee will be elaborated on November 18 during the SHERA membership meeting at the 2016 ASEEES Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. | |||||||
