The Society of Architectural Historians’ ever-popular fundraising tours are back. We are thrilled to announce Mexico City: Past & Present, August 5–7, 2023, led by Kathryn O’Rourke—professor of art and art history at Trinity University and the author of the award-winning Modern Architecture in Mexico City: History, Representation, and the Shaping of a Capital (University of Pittsburgh Press, 2016).

Your tour begins in the historic center of Mexico City. On Day 1 you’ll learn about the many layers of urban history and visit extraordinary works of colonial and nineteenth-century architecture. On Day 2 you will explore modernist sites in the southern part of the city, with visits to the UNAM campus and the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo House Studio Museum. Guests will stay at the 5-star Camino Real Polanco hotel and be treated to private tours of the Anahuacalli Museum, Tatiana Bilbao Estudio, and the National Museum of Anthropology. The tour concludes with evening cocktails at the penthouse apartment of scholar and curator James Oles, an expert on modern Mexican art and architecture. A full itinerary and registration information will be available soon.

SAH’s fundraising tours combine architectural exploration with experts plus the opportunity to support the organization and its activities. Proceeds from the tour will benefit SAH and its educational mission to promote the study, interpretation, and conservation of the built environment worldwide, for the benefit of all. Reservations are open to anyone with an interest in the art and architecture of Mexico City and in supporting SAH.
