 | SAH 2016 Conference Registration Opens December 8 Early registration for the SAH 2016 Annual International Conference in Pasadena/Los Angeles, California (April 6-10) will open on Tuesday, December 8, at 3 pm CT. Register early for the lowest rates and first choice of tours and special events. Early registration will close on February 3, 2016.

 | SAH 75th Anniversary Gala Raises Over $100,000 SAH capped its 75th anniversary year with the 6th annual Awards for Architectural Excellence gala Friday, Nov. 6 at the Woman’s Athletic Club (626 North Michigan Ave.) Approximately 200 fervent fans of historic architecture came together as SAH celebrated the careers of Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic Paul Goldberger, architect T. Gunny Harboe and preservation advocate Richard Longstreth, a past president of SAH. (View Gala photo gallery here.)

 | NEH Chairman Visits Charnley-Persky House On October 30, 2015, SAH welcomed William Adams, Chairman of NEH, to Charnley-Persky House. Adams met with SAH Director Pauline Saliga and Development Director Carolyn Garrett to discuss NEH’s long-term support of the Buildings of the United States publishing project and the online edition of the BUS books, SAH Archipedia.

 | Recap of SAH 75th Anniversary Reception at Harvard To celebrate the 75th anniversary of SAH’s founding at the Harvard Faculty Club on July 31, 1940, SAH held a celebratory reception at the Frances Loeb Library at the Harvard GSD on October 28, 2015. Through the generosity of Ann Whiteside, Librarian/Assistant Dean for Information Services at the Loeb Library, and several donors, more than fifty SAH and SAH New England Chapter members joined SAH President Ken Breisch and SAH Director Pauline Saliga for reminiscences about the Society.

 | Call for Nominations to the JSAH Editorial Advisory Committee SAH invites nominations and self-nominations for two individuals to serve on the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians Editorial Advisory Committee for a term of four years starting April 15, 2016. The Journal features leading scholarship in the English language in all aspects of the history of the built environment. Ideal candidates have published substantially in the field and may come from any of the Society’s constituencies in academia, preservation, museum work, or independent scholarship; institutional affiliation is not required. Deadline January 15, 2016.

There are nearly 3,000 images of historic and contemporary structures, cities and towns, and designed landscapes representing China. The range of content and the regions covered is remarkable, and attests to the varied research interests and travels of our contributors.

 | The New York Botanical Garden Study Day Report By Study Day Fellow Jennifer Thomas, PhD Candidate, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign On September 25th, the SAH Study Day at The New York Botanical Garden coincided with Pope Francis events in the city. Tour participants were warned to allow for extra travel time, but thankfully, taking the Metro-North Harlem Line to the Botanical Garden Station from Manhattan proved quick and easy that morning. There were several practicing architects in our group, as well as historians, designers, landscape/garden enthusiasts, and myself, a PhD candidate in landscape architectural history.

 | Architecture in the Rio de la Plata Basin Field Seminar Report By Field Seminar Fellow Liz Donato, PhD Candidate, CUNY The Rio de la Plata (the River Plate) basin, one of the widest in the world, is a region rich in architectural culture. The urban landscapes and architecture of its major cities have largely been shaped by the immense waves of immigration that reached its shores in the early 20th century, resulting in a unique architectural eclecticism.

 | Spanish Itineraries, Part 1: Barcelona to Ronda By Patricia Blessing, 2014 H. Allen Brooks Fellow The first part of my travels in Spain led me from Barcelona to Malaga, Granada, Cordoba, Seville, and Ronda. Later in the fellowship year, I will report from Madrid and northern Spain, yet at this stage, Barcelona and Andalusia are the focus. Barcelona, a city I have long wanted to visit, is not related to my research on medieval Islamic architecture, and hence my itinerary began with a destination draws most visitors to Barcelona: the Sagrada Familia.

| NEH Announces New Next Generation Humanities PhD Grant Program The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) recently announced a new grant program designed to inspire innovative models of doctoral education in the humanities that incorporate broader career preparation for PhD candidates. NEH Next Generation Humanities PhD grants seek to address the disparities between graduate student expectations for a career in academia and eventual career outcomes and to promote greater integration of the humanities in the public sphere. These grants will allow colleges and universities to plan for major changes to PhD programs and then implement programmatic initiatives that will transform understanding of what it means to be a humanities scholar. | Current SAH Opportunities Chicago Architecture Biennial Tours of the Charnley-Persky House: Wednesdays and Saturdays through December 23 HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship: A joint program with the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), this fellowship permits an architectural historian to work on a 12-week HABS project during the summer. Deadline December 31. Charles E. Peterson Fellowship of the Buildings of the United States and the Athenaeum of Philadelphia: This fellowship supports the participation of a graduate student in the research and writing for a volume in the Buildings of the United States series and/or SAH Archipedia. Deadline January 4, 2016. Call for Sessions: SAH 2017 Annual International Conference: SAH invites its members, including graduate students and independent scholars, representatives of SAH chapters, and partner organizations, to submit a session proposal for the 2017 conference in Glasgow, Scotland, June 7-11. The New England Chapter of SAH invites applications for The John Coolidge Research Fellowship and The Robert Rettig Student Annual Meeting Fellowship. The Coolidge Research Fellowship assists graduate students at a New England college or university working on topics in architectural history or a related field through an award of $500-$1,000. The Rettig Student Annual Meeting Fellowship helps graduate students or emerging professionals attend the SAH 2016 Annual International Conference in Pasadena/Los Angeles, CA. Schindler, 1945) in Studio City on November 15, at 2 p.m. A Historic Cultural Monument for the City of Los Angeles, the Presburger Residence is undergoing restoration after years of alterations by previous owners. Highlights of SESAH’s annual conference in San Antonio include paper sessions, tours of the missions, and the annual awards presentation. Authors honored were Carrie Dilley for Thatched Roofs and Open Sides, Richard Longstreth for “The Continuous Transformation of Savannah’s Broughton Street,” and Andrew Sandoval-Strausz for “Latino Landscapes,” Journal of American History. Belinda Stewart Architects received the 2015 Best of the South preservation award for their restoration of the Tallahatchie County Courthouse.
