SAH Archipedia—Interns/Research Assistants Wanted
SAH Archipedia is a media-rich, fully searchable, online encyclopedia of the built world that launched in October 2012. A joint venture of the Society of Architectural Historians and the University of Virginia Press, the SAH Archipedia received major funding from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Mellon Foundation, and the Graham Foundation.
SAH Archipedia contains 11,000 building histories from the Buildings of the United States print series. Accompanying each text-based building history are photographs, drawings, and dynamic maps, as well as comprehensive geospatial and semantic metadata. Because the content of the beta version is not born-digital, the metadata must be “reverse engineered,” i.e. generated from the existing building histories.
SAH Archipedia seeks Research Assistants to work with the Editor during the spring of 2013 to review machine-generated semantic tags dealing with period and style, materials, and building types and divisions. Candidates should possess knowledge of the history of architecture and urbanism in the United States and have an interest in the digital humanities and working with controlled vocabularies. No special technical knowledge or equipment is required. The work is completed remotely 24/7 via the internet. Time commitment is flexible.
Those interested in joining the “tag team” as SAH Archipedia Interns/Research Assistants should send CV and brief statement of interest to SAH Archipedia Editor Gabrielle Esperdy at firstname.lastname@example.org.
