by SAH News | Nov 27, 2017

Dr. Michelangelo Sabatino has been appointed as Rowe Family Dean of the College of Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology for an interim period of two years, through the end of the 2018–2019 academic year.

Dr. Sabatino is an architect and historian whose interdisciplinary research and teaching speaks to the intersections between design, culture, and technology in the built and natural environment.   He earned a professional degree in architecture at the Università Iuav di Venezia and a doctorate in art and architectural history at the University of Toronto. He pursued a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard University and has received several other fellowships, the most recent from The Newberry Library in Chicago. Dr. Sabatino taught at Yale University and the University of Houston before his appointment to Illinois Institute of Technology as professor and director of the Ph.D. Program in Architecture.   A search for a new dean of the College of Architecture will begin in 2018.

Sabatino has received several grants for his research, and publishes regularly in scholarly journals and anthologies. His newest book, Canada—Modern Architectures in History (2016), was co-authored with Rhodri Windsor-Liscombe.   Dr. Sabatino received the Alice Davis Hitchcock award in 2012 for his book Pride in Modesty: Modernist Architecture and the Vernacular Tradition in Italy.  He has been an SAH member since 1999.
