The Society of Architectural Historians announces that its 2023 Annual International Conference will be held in two parts: in Montréal, Canada, from April 12 to 16 and virtually from September 20 to 22. Proposals for both parts must be submitted by the same deadline.
Please note: This is the only Call for Session proposals for the 2023 conference. At the time you submit your proposal, please indicate whether you would like to participate as a Session Chair for Montréal 2023 or Virtual 2023.
The Society invites everyone interested in the history of the built environment to submit a proposal to chair a session at the conference. SAH membership is required to chair or present research at the Annual International Conference, thus non-members who are selected to chair a session or deliver a paper will be required to join SAH in August–September 2022 when conference registration opens for Session Chairs and Speakers.
Since the principal purpose of the Annual International Conference is to inform conference attendees of the general state of research in architectural history and related disciplines, session proposals covering every period in the history of architecture and all aspects of the built environment, including landscape and urban history, are encouraged.
Sessions may be theoretical, methodological, thematic, interdisciplinary, pedagogical, revisionist or documentary in premise and have broadly conceived or more narrowly focused subjects. Sessions that embrace cross-cultural and transnational topics are particularly welcome. Topics related to historic preservation and cultural heritage as related to architecture are also encouraged. Proposals will be selected on the basis of merit and the need to create a well-balanced program. Topics exploring the architecture of Montréal and the province of Québec are encouraged. In every case, the subject should be clearly defined in critical and historical terms.
Since late submissions cannot be considered, it is recommended that proposals be submitted well before the deadline. The Conference Chair is not responsible for last-minute submissions that fail posting in the online portal or are sent in error via email.
Sessions for Montréal 2023 will not be recorded.
Sessions for Virtual 2023 will be recorded in their entirety, and full sessions will be available for 30 days after the virtual conference.
Session proposals are to be submitted online by 5:00 pm CST, on Monday, January 31, 2022. The portal will close automatically at this time. Carla Yanni, SAH First Vice President elect and Chair of the SAH 2023 Annual International Conference, and a conference session selection committee will review and select the session proposals.
Prospective Session Chairs must include the following in their proposal:
- A session title not longer than 65 characters, including spaces and punctuation
- Summary of the subject and the premise in no more than 500 words
- Your name, professional affiliation (if applicable), address, telephone, and email address
- A current CV (2 pages max)

Proposals must be submitted through the online portal to be considered.
Authors (maximum of 2) of accepted proposals will be asked to draft a more concise summary description for the Call for Papers of their session (no more than 300 words). This will be posted and communicated on April 19, 2022, and published in the April 2022 SAH Newsletter. For examples, see the 2022 Call for Papers (session descriptions begin on page 4).
Session chairs are expected to fund their own travel and related expenses to participate in the conference. A copy of the Session Chair Guidelines that includes deadlines and step-by-step processes will be distributed. Session chairs are required to pre-register for the conference in August 2022.
