The Society of Architectural Historians will host their 71st annual international conference in St. Paul this month, including two back-to-back panel discussions on the architectural history and post-industrial future of the Mississippi River.
The seminar-style event — “Confluences: Place, Change and Meaning on the Mississippi” — will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 21, a Saturday, at the Science Museum of Minnesota, 120 West Kellogg Boulevard. Admission is $10.
Speakers will focus on the past, present and future of Fort Snelling, St. Paul’s proposed River Balcony project, and the Minneapolis mill district and its proposed Water Works park.
Panelists include the manager of the city’s Great River Passage initiative and representatives of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area, the Minnesota Design Center, the University of Minnesota’s Heritage Studies and Public History Department, the St. Paul Riverfront Corporation, St. Cloud State University’s Ethnic and Women’s Studies and Multicultural Resource Center and others.
