Join us May 29 to June 1, 2024, in Miami and Coral Gables, Florida, for the 11th annual Docomomo US National Symposium – the primary event in the United States for professionals and enthusiasts to discuss and share efforts to preserve modern architecture.

Entitled Streams of Modernity: Postwar to Postmodern, this year’s Symposium seeks to promote a broader understanding of the accomplishments of postwar to Postmodern architecture and culture in regionally specific contexts such as South Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Themes to be explored include: Tropical Brutalism, Postwar campus planning in the (sub)tropics, LGBTQ+Modernism, Postwar tourism, urban renewal and Interstate infrastructure, Modern architecture and popular culture in south Florida, polychrome Modern and the integration of the arts, and more.

Are you a member of Docomomo US who lives in Florida?
The Docomomo US/Florida chapter is offering reduced registration at $150 for the full Symposium event for the first 10 registrants who live in the state of Florida and are also a member of Docomomo US. While this opportunity is available to all Florida residents, the primary intent is to remove barriers to participation and to encourage Florida residents for whom participation may be financially or otherwise prohibitive to attend the full conference.

Symposium Schedule at a Glance
The National Symposium takes place Wednesday, May 29–Saturday, June 1. Wednesday features the opening keynote by Art Conservator, Writer, and Curator Rosa Lowinger, followed by a reception at the University of Miami’s Lowe Art Museum. Heads up Symposium regulars: This year we’re flip-flopping sessions and tours to offset high temps in the afternoon.

Thursday and Friday tours are held in the morning, while sessions take place in the afternoon at the University of Miami School of Architecture. Friday evening’s closing keynote by Docomomo International Chair Uta Pottgiesser is followed by the closing reception at The Wolfsonian. A variety of al la carte registrations are available throughout the duration of the Symposium.

All tours and sessions will be submitted for AIA credits.

It’s All About the Tours

The Docomomo US National Symposium is known for its uniquely crafted tours, bringing you to sites that are not usually open to the public with expert guides leading the way. Tours sell out quickly, so be sure to book as soon as possible, and make sure to book one or two to get the full picture of Miami Modernism.

Travel and Accommodations
Symposium attendees are encouraged to stay at the preferred hotel partner, Kenneth Triester-designed Mayfair House Hotel & Garden in Miami’s vibrant Coconut Grove neighborhood. Additional hotel accommodations will be provided. Booking links coming soon.
