The Decorative Arts Trust invites you to register to watch its "pay-what-you-wish" Virtual Tour of the Hispanic Society Museum and Library’s exhibition A Room of Her Own: The Estrado and the Hispanic World.
Curator Alexandra Frantischek Rodriguez-Jack guides us on this captivating tour of decorative arts, paintings, rare books, and engravings from the Hispanic Society’s unrivaled collection, with many works on view for the first time. The show, which closed March 9, 2025, explored the rich history of the sala de estrado—a woman’s private drawing room found in early modern Spain and the Spanish Americas—and illuminates the estrado’s long-overlooked role in female agency, social practices, and intercultural exchange. Many objects highlight female patronage, taste, and buying power that was possible in a gender-specific space. After falling out of fashion in the mid-19th century, the estrado was largely forgotten, and this is the first special exhibition to delve into the enigmatic history of these rooms and their contents.
