The Society of Architectural Historians is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 SAH Awards for Architectural Excellence: Cynthia Weese, FAIA, Robert A.M. Stern, FAIA, Harry Hunderman, FAIA, and Deborah Slaton. The honorees will be recognized at the SAH Awards Gala on Friday, November 2, 2018, at The Arts Club of Chicago. Tickets are on sale now.

   2018 SAH/Mellon Author Award Winners
The Society of Architectural Historians is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2018 SAH/Mellon Author Awards. These awards are granted to scholars publishing their first monograph on the history of the built environment and help defray the expenses of image licensing, reproduction, and creation of original drawings and maps.

HABS   HABS-SAH Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship
A joint program of SAH and the National Park Service's Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS), the Sally Kress Tompkins Fellowship permits a graduate student in architectural history or a related field the opportunity to work on a 12-week HABS history project during the summer of 2019. The application deadline is December 31, 2018.

Abrams    SAH and Docomomo US Issue Joint Statement on Abrams House
On September 4, 2018, SAH and Docomomo US issued a joint position statement on the preservation of the Venturi, Rauch, and Scott Brown-designed Abrams House (1979) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

FOTP   Future of the Past Campaign Exceeds Fundraising Goal
On June 1st SAH launched the Future of the Past Campaign to raise $40,000 by August 31st to complete the second half of an $80,000 matching grant offer from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). I am delighted to report that in this three-month period, through your generosity we raised $62,696, exceeding our goal, and enabling SAH to receive the full $80,000 matching grant from NEH to support SAH Archipedia.

SAH is accepting proposals for roundtable discussions, meetings, or informational presentations for the SAH 2019 Annual International Conference to be held in Providence, RI, April 24–28. A limited number of slots will be available for the midday break and during the hours of the daily conference proceedings.

  JSAH in the Classroom
As the academic year kicks off, we ask those of you who teach to consider including JSAH articles in your course syllabi. Widely recognized as the leading English-language journal on history of the built environment, each issue of JSAH offers four to five scholarly articles on a range of topics and time periods, book reviews, reviews of exhibitions and multimedia, as well as editorials designed to place the discipline of architectural history within a larger intellectual context.

HENTF    Disaster Resources from the HENTF
FEMA and the Smithsonian Institution co-sponsor the Heritage Emergency National Task Force (HENTF), a partnership of 58 national service organizations and federal agencies created to protect cultural heritage from the damaging effects of natural disasters and other emergencies. FL    SAH Archipedia: Florida's 100 Classic Buildings Completed
A list of Florida's Classic Buildings has been added to SAH Archipedia. From the Spanish Castillo de San Marco to the Pink House, state coordinators David Rifkind and John Stuart have contributed entries for 100 of the state’s significant buildings and sites.

   Missing Decades, Hidden Labor: Reconstructing and Interpreting Industrial Heritage in South Africa

Standing in Pretoria’s Church Square a few weeks back, the sounds and sights of urban construction were omnipresent. Dozens of workers hefted shovels and axes under the midday sun as part of a new public work, stripping the existing surface of the square in preparation for a larger renovation.

Building the Stories of Architects
On October 11, public television producer Daniel Andries will talk about the choices he makes in bringing the work and stories of architects and urban planners to TV audiences. He will explore how as a storyteller he manages the balance between art, personality, history and the power of current societal thinking about work, the environment, social equity and urban space. Humanities for All: Scholarly Societies Column
To highlight the public impact of the humanities in higher education, the National Humanities Alliance recently launched Humanities for All: a website that documents the past 10 years of publicly engaged humanities research, teaching, and programming in universities and colleges across the U.S. The website presents a cross section of over 1,400 projects, searchable, sortable, and illustrated with 51 in-depth profiles. When viewed together, these initiatives illustrate the broad impact of the humanities beyond higher education. Read More

The preliminary schedule for the 2018 SESAH conference is now available. Hosted by Kansas State University at Manhattan from October 3-6, the conference includes six paper sessions with presenters from around the U.S., walking tour of the KSU campus, keynote lecture by Kansas City architect Bob Berkebile, evening reception, awards presentation, and a Saturday Study Tour of architectural landmarks in the Kansas Flint Hills. Society of Historians of Eastern European, Eurasian, and Russian Art and Architecture (SHERA) Business Meeting at the ASEEES 50th Annual Convention 6-9 December, Boston, MA 2018, is scheduled on December 7, 8:00-9:30pm, Boston Marriott Copley Place, 3, Brandeis.The SHERA Graduate Student Travel Grant to the ASEEES Convention, made possible by a generous anonymous donation, was awarded to Denis Stolyarov, a PhD student at The Courtauld Institute of Art, UK, presenting on “Contested Spaces: Radical Potential in the Post-Soviet Art Gallery.”
