Dell Upton Appointed Visiting Scholar at Dumbarton Oaks

Aug 7, 2023 by SAH News

Dumbarton Oaks is delighted to announce the recent appointment of fellows in our three areas of study—Byzantine, Garden and Landscape, and Pre-Columbian—as well as the Mellon Initiative in Democracy and Landscape, in conjunction with the Mellon Foundation.

In June, Dumbarton Oaks welcomed fifteen fellows to jointheir vibrant summer community. During the 2023–2024 academic year, forty-two fellows, including research fellows, junior fellows, visiting scholars, and artists in residence, will join scholarly programs. They are also pleased to support six project grants in Byzantine Studies and Garden and Landscape Studies.

"We are extremely excited for these new scholars to join our community, who represent the very best of a very competitive field of candidates. The variety of their scholarly interests and their diverse geographic origins attest to Dumbarton Oaks' global reach as a residential research center," said Thomas B.F. Cummins, PhD, director of Dumbarton Oaks. "We are profoundly committed to providing the time and resources for our scholars to pursue their individual projects and to engage with the work of their colleagues."

Dell Upton has been appointed a Visiting Scholar in Garden and Landscape Studies for the 2023-2024 Spring term.
