John K. Notz, Jr., a distinguished Chicago attorney, historian, and preservationist, passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 93. His obituary appeared in the Chicago Tribune on August 5, 2025.

John was a longtime member and supporter of SAH.  Having joined in 1996, he became a Benefactor member in 2011.  He served a term on the SAH Executive Committee as Treasurer,  and on the SAH Celebrates Host Committee for over 10 years.  He also attended many SAH study tour programs and was a generous supporter of the Charnley-Persky House.   The Library of American Landscape History named John a Preservation Hero in 2018 for his involvement in the preservation of important American landscapes, including cemeteries and lakeside gardens.  Many SAH members and SAH Chicago Chapter members will greatly miss John’s continued and vibrant intellectual curiosity.
