Established in 1979 as a division of the National Gallery of Art, the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts is among the United States’ leading research centers, fostering the study of art, artifacts, architecture, urbanism, photography, and film from all places and periods. Each year, our fellowship programs support about 43 individuals across career levels and areas of study, with terms ranging from two months to three years.

In-residence fellows join appointed professors, postdoctoral research associates, and staff to build an engaging intellectual community that thrives on the rich exchange of ideas across disciplines. Fellows are provided with office space in the National Gallery’s East Building; those who relocate also receive nearby housing, subject to availability.

Applications are now open for all fellowships, with deadlines ranging from September 21 to November 21.
