A call from Concordia Discors vs. Discordia Concors, International Journal for Researches into Comparative Literature, Contrastive Linguistics, Cross-Cultural and Translation Strategies.
As spatialisation emerges as one of the dominant effects of contemporary culture’s acknowledgement of its own materiality, not least through the means of the configurations that sense-making practices are predicated on – narratives, cartographies, mappings, topologies, architectures, diagrams – one of the key modes of manifestation of temporality is represented by increasing entropy. The configurations that serve to ground meaning by virtue of their stability are not impervious to the effects of the same principle that governs the very materiality they seek to address in the first place, as the ‘lines’ that define their outlines exhibit equal plasticity, being constantly redrawn, refined, and redefined, ultimately becoming borders that open up spaces within their depths and invite trespassing, at the same time. This process results in constant morphing and proliferation of new, competing configurations that incorporate remnants of the ones they have grown out of, highlighting the fragility of the meaning they enable.
In this light, any attempt at making sense of, representing or communicating experience, the self or reality amounts to one of negotiating these ever shifting lines of tension between meaning and entropy, embedding the same fragility in its object. Yet, at the same time, it involves operations of memory that are as much of the order of retrieval as of that of reconstruction and of forgetting, given that navigating the map of the real amounts to constantly configuring and reconfiguring it.
We invite submissions in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish for the 24th issue of the peer-reviewed academic journal Concordia Discors vs. Discordia Concors: Researches into Comparative Literature, Contrastive Linguistics, Cross-Cultural and Translation Strategies (http://condisdiscon.blogspot.com) exploring memory processes in their mediation of meaning against the background of increasing entropy.
