The Society of Architectural Historian members are invited to one-of-a-kind evening exploring how international travel shaped the thinking of Richard Morris Hunt (1827-1895), renowned American architect of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Vanderbilt mansions, and the HI New York City hostel. The event will be hosted at 891 Amsterdam Avenue, the home of the HI New York City hostel. Today, Hunt's 1880s building along Amsterdam Avenue welcomes thousands of world visitors seeking unique experiences and the enlightenment that only travel can bring.
The evening's program will be an in-conversation between historian Sam Watters, foremost author on Richard Morris Hunt, and Lisa Gurwitch, global nonprofit executive and former HI USA Board member. Watters has written two books on Hunt, including Richard Morris Hunt: The Collector (2025) and The Gilded Life of Richard Morris Hunt (2024), which features 891 Amsterdam Avenue.
The program begins at 6:30 PM and will be followed by an optional book signing and hostel tours. Read more about the event and register at www.hiusa.org/morrishunt. Society of Architectural Historian members receive $10 off registration with by entering discount code RHM10 at checkout.
