SAH Expands Member Benefits in 2017 and 2018

Oct 16, 2017 by SAH News

In response to recent feedback from SAH members, we are pleased to announce a host of expanded SAH member benefits below. All of SAH’s existing member benefits remain in place including access to current and archival issues of JSAH (1941-the present), access to all of the Buildings of the United States books as well as new, born-digital content in SAH Archipedia, and the ability to safeguard and share your images for teaching and research through the SAHARA image archive. New benefits that we’re pleased to announce include the following:

MEMBER BOOK LAUNCHES AT SAH

In an effort to celebrate SAH’s “culture of the book,” we will be glad to work with members and their publishers to organize receptions or small salon-like talks around the release of new books at the SAH landmark headquarters, Charnley-Persky House. We recognize that there just are not enough opportunities to celebrate new publications, and we’d like to share your research with Chicago audiences. To organize a book launch, please contact Christopher Kirbabas at ckirbabas@sah.org or 312.573.1365.

AN OFFICE AWAY FROM HOME AT SAH

Whether you’re in Chicago for the day or doing research in the city on an extended fellowship, we welcome SAH members to think of the Charnley-Persky House as their office on-the-go. Members are welcome to reserve space—at no cost—to work for the day in one of the cozy alcoves on the first floor of our Louis Sullivan/Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building. Why drink your coffee at Starbucks when you can enjoy peace, quiet and free WiFi in an inspirational space at SAH? To reserve an alcove, please contact Christopher Kirbabas at ckirbabas@sah.org or 312.573.1365.

MELLON-FUNDED FELLOWSHIPS TO DEVELOP NEW LECTURES

The Global Architectural History Teaching Consortium (GAHTC) has generously allied with SAH in its current Mellon grant to develop lectures and course materials for teaching global architectural history at the survey level. GAHTC is offering $2,300 grants to scholars who will invest the time to convert their research paper that was delivered at an SAH Annual International Conference into an undergraduate-level lecture for distribution through the online GAHTC course library. Learn more about GAHTC/SAH Research-to-Teaching Grants.

MELLON-FUNDED FELLOWSHIPS FOR SAH FIELD SEMINARS

GAHTC also will offer one fellowship of $5,000 to an emerging or tenured scholar to participate in one of SAH’s three upcoming international Field Seminars. In return, the scholar will produce one or more lectures for sharing through the online GAHTC course library. Read more about GAHTC/SAH Field Seminar Travel Grants.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

We are working on future benefits that we will roll out in calendar year 2018. They include the following:

  • SAH is currently working with the Modern Language Association (MLA) to develop SAH Commons, a robust networking and online publishing site. With funding from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, MLA developed the open access Humanities Commons platform as a non-profit, online social network and repository for people in the humanities. We are working with MLA to develop the SAH Commons site for 2018, which will simultaneously enable sharing of your profile, expertise, scholarship and WordPress website with the larger, interdisciplinary, open access Humanities Commons site. While we build SAH Commons, we invite you to explore Humanities Commons.
  • SAH is negotiating with a number of publishers to offer our members year-round discounts on books related to our field. Publishers who exhibit at the SAH annual conference already offer significant discounts on their publications. Stay tuned for additional discounts throughout the year.
  • While all of the benefits outlined detailed above are available to grad students, SAH is actively seeking funding to create more resources for graduate students, particularly fellowships to participate in the SAH Annual International Conference and professional workshops to discuss pedagogy, publishing, and careers.
